Frequently Asked Questions
OTOPLASTY (Ear surgery)
- DOES EAR SURGERY LEAVE SCARS?
Scarring in this surgery is barely visible, since they are located in the back of the ear, in the natural crease line formed by the ear and the head. Additionally, since this is a region with very thin skin, the scar itself tends to be very faint even in some techniques that use small incisions in the front.
- WHAT TYPE OF ANESTHESIA WILL I TAKE?
Children: general anesthesia. Adults: local anesthesia with sedation (at the discretion of the doctor).
- HOW LONG WILL I NEED TO STAY IN HOSPITAL?
Half a day up to one day, depending on the type of anesthesia and age of the patient.
- HOW LONG DOES THE SURGERY TAKE?
Normally, from 90 to 120 minutes. However, surgery duration should not be confused with the time in which a patient stays in the Surgery Room, since that includes the period for anesthetic preparation and post-surgery recovery. Your doctor will inform you on the total duration of the surgery.
- IS THIS SURGERY DANGEROUS?
The danger involved in not higher or lower than the one involved in a plane or car trip, or simply street crossing. They are routine risks which doctors we are accustomed to facing.
- IS THERE POST-SURGERY PAIN?
Some discomfort may occur after surgery, which may be easily lessened by common painkillers.
- WHAT ARE BANDAGES LIKE?
Scars are protected by small bandages. Ears are protected (mainly in children) in the first days with a type of cap to avoid local injuries. In some cases, we recommend the use of head dressing, similar to headbands (like those worn in ballet or tennis).
- WHEN ARE STITCHES REMOVED? IS THERE ANY PAIN?
Around the 8th day. There is no pain when stitches are removed.
- ISN'T THERE ANY RISK THAT PROTRUDING EARS REAPPEAR AFTER SURGERY?
If the surgery is duly performed, the result will be definite. You should bear in mind that a small asymmetry may occur, since this happens even in people who have never been operated and have normal ears.
