Frequently Asked Questions
MENTOPLASTY (Chin augmentation surgery)
- WHERE ARE SCARS LOCATED?
There could be an internal incision made inside the mouth or a small incision in the natural crease line under the chin. This will depend on the decision of each surgeon.
- WHAT TYPE OF ANESTHESIA WILL I TAKE?
Normally, this type of surgery is indicated for adult patients. If only the chin will be corrected, local anesthesia may be used (with previous sedation, as the case may be). If it is combined with other surgeries, the surgeon will consider the convenience of performing the surgery under local or general anesthesia.
- WHAT IS THE SILICONE IMPLANT LIKE?
The surgeon normally models the shell or uses a pre-modeled piece (there are different sizes that may be showed to the patient during pre-surgery interviews).
- IS SILICONE DANGEROUS? CAN IT CAUSE CANCER?
Solid silicone has been used in surgeries for more than 35 years, all over the world, with thousands of operated patients, and there are no records evidencing that it may have carcinogenic action. This is an inert substance to the body, which is kept in the place where it is implanted, within a capsule created by the body itself in the first days after surgery. Rarely the shell is eliminated. If this happens (generally due to post-surgery problems caused by infection, injuries in the operated area, bleeding, etc.), the shell is removed by surgery with local anesthesia, with no complications. Further, the implant may be reintroduced. Liquid silicone is condemned by doctors.
- IS THERE POST-SURGERY PAIN?
Generally not. In cases of some pain, this can be easily lessened by common painkillers.
- ARE BANDAGES NECESSARY?
Typically local bandages are used with the purpose of helping to maintain the implant fixed. Also, bandages protect the breasts from possible injuries that may occur in the first days.
- HOW LONG WILL I NEED TO RESUME MY NORMAL ACTIVITIES?
Depending on the activities, only one day. Special cases may require relative cares for 4 or 5 days, but this does not imply absolute repose.
- WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT CARE I SHOULD TAKE BEFORE SURGERY?
You should inform your doctor on any tooth infection or inflammation, especially in the lower dental arch. If this occurs, you must have it treated by your dentist even before the appointment with the surgeon for chin augmentation.
- WILL MY FACIAL FEATURES CHANGE WITH THIS SURGERY?
No big changes will happen to your facial features. You will only have a better balance in your physiognomy, but your individual characteristics will be maintained.
- CAN THIS SURGERY BE COMBINED WITH RHINOPLASTY (NOSE SURGERY)?
In many cases the surgeon himself recommends the combination of both surgeries in order to obtain a better aesthetic balance of the face.
